Library

A School Library plays an integral role in teaching and learning process. It promotes reading, and motivates readers and learners for life. The school has two spacious libraries, each located on the first and the second floor of the school building. The Junior Library caters to the primary school students and has a wide range of books and authors that are of interest to younger children. While the Senior Library has a collection of subject- oriented books along with other titles widely read by the Senior School students. The well-experienced librarians assist students to choose books, reference books and other relevant material. They ensure that the library is updated with books of popular authors and different titles.

Both the libraries are well lit and have multi-functional space, where the students come and enjoy reading. The school library is enriched with wide variety of resources which includes books, periodicals, reference books, textbooks and Audio and Visual CDs to support the teaching and learning process. We have a collection of approximately 45,000 books and other reading material.

Chemistry Lab

The school has a well-equipped, spacious Chemistry Lab located on the second floor of the school building. The lab is well lit up and fitted with exhaust fan. LED television with internet, smart board modules, models and charts make learning fun. The laboratory has all the necessary equipment for preparation of samples and standards for analysis of liquid and solid samples. It has all the necessary chemicals, glassware, apparatus, centrifuge machine, chemical and electronic balances. Hazardous chemicals are kept under lock and their use is closely monitored.

The Lab is spacious enough to accommodate 24 students. There are facilities for senior students to perform their investigatory projects. The teachers and the lab assistant cautiously supervise the lab activities to ensure that the students work under absolute safety. All safety protocols are followed to ensure safety of the students.

Physics Lab

The school has a Physics Lab located on the second floor. It is fitted with latest equipment and six tables are arranged to facilitate smooth conduct of experiments. LED televisions with internet, Smart Board modules models and charts, make learning complex concepts easy. The students use various apparatus to learn to perform procedures, collect and analyse data, draw inference and answer questions while performing the experiments.

The lab can accommodate about 24 students. The faculty is committed to nurturing the curious minds of the students. There is a well- qualified lab assistant, who helps the teacher in demonstrating experiments and arranging apparatus for the students.

Biology Lab

The Biology Lab of the school caters to the students of Classes IX-XII. It is well lit up and spacious and can comfortably accommodate around 24 students. Equipped with advanced facilities where students are exposed to the mysteries of the living world, it aims to encourage students to learn by doing.

LED televisions with internet, Smart Board modules, precision instruments, a terrarium, charts and 3-D models make learning fun and effective. The students explore organisms, cells and tissues of plants and animals through simple, binocular and compound microscopes; learn about the bones and body structure through human skeleton; study body organs using biological models and charts and also explore various species of flora and fauna through preserved specimens.

Class XI and XII students perform their investigatory projects here. The school garden is used as an extension of the Biology Lab and many field experiments are performed there. A qualified lab assistant manages the lab and helps the students perform the experiments.

The laboratory is quite spacious and has a variety of apparatus .The specimens are arranged systematically and safety equipment are placed in close proximity.

Computer Lab

Somerville School has two air- conditioned computer labs, one on the first floor and the other on the second floor. The labs are accessible to students from Classes IV to XII, creating inclusive, structured learning environment where the learners can prepare for future technology. Both the labs are well- equipped with advanced hardware and software to aid learning and cater to the students’ requirements. The labs are designed to facilitate a myriad of learning activities like individual learning and testing and collaborative group work.

Each laboratory has 20 to 25 systems. The internet facility is available in the labs and is used by students when required under close supervision and guidance of their teachers. The labs have Smart Boards and LED televisions with internet to make teaching and learning an effective process.

Smart Equipped Classrooms

The school has more than seventy classrooms for Classes Pre-school to XII all of which are equipped with LED televisions with internet, Smart Boards, Tata Class Edge - an innovative and comprehensive educational solution. These interactive tools help teachers boost student engagement, while the digital content accommodates different learning styles leading to improved comprehension, keeping students engaged and a more inclusive classroom environment. The students are more focused and intuitive.

These new tools and techniques help the students understand the concepts very well and learn about how they can be applied to our daily lives. Desks and chairs are arranged systematically to comfortably accommodate 35-40 students. Other facilities like air-conditioners and air purifiers are installed in the classrooms. Informative charts are displayed on the bulletin boards. These comfortable classrooms provide a space where learning can take place uninterrupted without distractions.

Mathematics Lab

The Mathematics Laboratory at Somerville School is located on the second floor in the senior block. The school has a well-equipped and spacious lab. It is an air-conditioned laboratory equipped with Smart Board, lab tools and computers. NIIT NGuru software and manipulatives are used by students and teachers to add to classroom learning. The students experiment, learn and explore mathematical concepts and verify mathematical facts and theorems.

The Laboratory can accommodate 45 to 50 students. The Lab provides the students of Classes III to X, an experience of learning the subject through visualising the problem, using 3D modelling and innovative activities. Under the able guidance of the faculty members, the students are provided an opportunity to understand and internalize the basic mathematical concepts through concrete objects and situations. It enables them to verify or discover several geometrical properties and facts using models or by paper cutting and folding techniques.

The laboratory provides opportunity to exhibit the relatedness of mathematical concepts with everyday life. It helps the students to build interest and confidence in learning the subject.

Music

INDIAN MUSIC –VOCAL/ INDIAN MUSIC-INSTRUMENTAL

Indian Vocal Music and Tabla teachers in the Junior and Senior School nurture the young, enthusiasts in the art of Indian vocal and instrumental music. There are four rooms dedicated for this activity in the school premises, each equipped with a variety of musical instruments like the Harmonium, Tabla, Congo, Sitar, Tanpura, etc. Our music room is predominantly used as a dedicated space for music and choral activities. All students of the school, ranging from the primary to the senior school go through training, discovering their talent and interests in different art forms. Their talent gets a boost through the competitions held in the school and at the Inter- School and Zonal levels. Our students have had the privilege of performing at several prestigious events where they won great appreciation and recognition.

WESTERN MUSIC ROOM

Our school has a well-equipped music room, where students can play any musical instrument of their choice. Our Western Music room, located on the ground floor of the school building and offers unique learning environment, dedicated to the art of music, which include musical instruments like the guitar, drums, keyboard, violin etc. along with proper furniture items. Music lessons are imparted by our highly committed and talented teachers, allowing students to learn, practice, create and rehearse for performances in a comfortable and inspiring environment.

These spaces are great for individual and group creativity and self-expression. Our music room is well lit, comfortable and spacious enough to accommodate students as well as the musical instruments and other accessories. Our students develop their skills and creativity, and foster a lifelong love and appreciation of music.

Dance

Dance as a discipline, increases muscular strength, endurance and motor fitness. The school has a spacious Dance Room which is located on the first floor of the school building. The flooring of the room is anti-skid, suitable for learning different dance forms to teach dance to the students of different classes. Through dance, students gain a multitude of important developments; sensory and spatial awareness, coordination, concentration and mobility.

Various dance forms, ranging from Indian folk and classical to freestyle and contemporary are taught to the students by our experienced team of highly committed dance teachers. Dance engages the artistic processes of creating, performing and critical analysis. Our young dynamic performers have won accolades for the school, mastering their skills in different forms of dance.

Art and Craft

Located on the second floor is the Applied Art Room. Neatly arranged artist desks beckon all the budding artists to learn the finer aspects of art and give vent to their creative impulses. They draw and paint Still Life, human figures, nature or give flight to their imagination through their creations on paper or canvas. They are introduced to the works of great artists and painters through the audio-visual screen available in the room. The wide variety of books on Art and artists add to the diversity of material available for the curious and enthusiastic artist.

Sports

Somerville School has sprawling grounds stretching out to the end of the building.The students have access to all the facilities available. Adequate infrastructure is provided for indoor and outdoor games. The green cover is used by the students for playing football. There is a separate court for playing badminton, volleyball, handball, throw ball etc. On theextreme end of the field is theBasketball court. The students receive coaching in different games from our expert and experienced instructors. All the track and field events are played on the extensive ground. There is an Activity area adjacent to the main playground where students play indoor games like table tennis, chess, carrometc.The school also provides coaching in martial arts. A large number of students are being trained for Taekwondo by our expert trainer. They represent the school at various competitions and winnumerous accolades. Our sports curriculum includes hands-on learning opportunities that teach students the fundamentals of the individual sport as well as the skills they need to compete successfully in team games.

PLAY PEN

The school has a large playground with a designated play area for young children, providing them an exhilarating experience combined with physical activity and the joy of learning. The different combination of swings help to improve coordination, strength and critical thinking. The playground equipment include traditional swings, slides of various shapes and sizes, balance bridge climber, multi-play unit and innovative, interactive play structures designed for sensory stimulation and inclusive play. Special attention has been given to the selection of equipment, ensuring safety standards and its developmental benefits.

SPECIAL STUDY CENTRE

The special study centre provides an exclusive space and aided education for the students to have 1:1, or small group intervention under the guidance ofspecial educators. The centre is designed to enhance the learning experience of the child in an inclusive classroom through remediation and effective strategies, designed to help individuals with learning difficulties or other concerns, achieve higher level of academic proficiency. The room is equipped with a personal computer for improving computer skills and a smart TV screen to utilize latest resources for subject-wise drilling and practice. The room also has its personalised library with reference books, support material and sample papers to help students train for examinations. The students are given sessions with focus on their IEP (Individualized Education Plan) goals and given comprehensive support to ensure least restrictive learning experience through modified assessments, customized TLM for specific concepts, multi modal teaching, specific concept remediation. The special educators train and encourage participation of CWSN in interschool,zonal and district level events.Thechildren are given multiple opportunities to showcase their talents in the field of sports, music, dance, craft etc. The centre also extends positive behaviour management and counselling sessions for students, to help them accommodate and adjust to school environment.Parents play a crucial role in assisting the teachers to develop the child’s IEP, hence regular interactions and counselling sessionsmake them active stakeholders inthe child’s development and progress.

SCHOOL BUSES

The school has a fleet of thirty one buses to facilitate travel for students in Delhi and NCR. The buses are very well maintained and sent for regular services for their upkeep. They are equipped with speed governors to control the speed ensuring safety of the students. The buses are manned by a highly-skilled staff. There are cameras installed along with a screen to monitor student safety in the bus. The GPS facility has also been extended to the parents so as to track the arrival time of the bus at their respective bus stops. The teachers present in the bus ensure that all safety measures are observed, along with taking attendance twice a day, maintaining discipline and proper seating of students.
